Making salt dough ornaments is so easy! You probably already have everything you need in your cupboard to make them. In the past, I’ve used a basic salt dough recipe to make Christmas ornaments. For Valentine’s Day I wanted something more rustic looking, so I used whole wheat flour and added cinnamon to the recipe. I am very happy with how the Cinnamon Salt Dough Hearts turned out.
There are so many things you can do with these ornaments. I’ve tied some jute to mine to create primitive napkin rings. I also attached a couple of hearts to a canning jar, to make a pretty container for Valentine’s Day candy. Try adding a round piece of scrapbooking paper to the top of the jar to make it even prettier. The possibilities are endless with this simple craft!
Cinnamon Salt Dough Hearts
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mix all ingredients together adding a little bit of the water at a time. You may not need all of the water to get the right consistency. Combine ingredients until a soft dough has formed. The consistency should resemble that of playdough.
- Knead the dough 6 - 7 minutes, or until smooth.
- With floured hands, roll the dough out onto a floured surface until you get your desired thickness. At least 1/4 inch in thickness.
- Cut out with heart shaped cookie cutters. Use the round end of a pastry tip to punch holes in the dough, where you want to lace the jute cord through.
- Bake at 300 degrees for 45 - 60 minutes, keeping an eye on them toward the end to avoid over-browning. Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.
- Optionally, you can paint the ornaments with acrylic paint or spray with a clear acrylic spray paint, such as Krylon.

I have a question. If you choose to spray these with the clear spray paint, are they pretty durable or do they fall apart easily. I would like to save this for my Christmas gifts but I’m afraid that they wont make the trip when I ship them.
They should last a very long time with a clear acrylic paint.
These are great! I so love adding decorations on the outside of jars and such.
BTW, I am unable to pin the picture. Any reason why? All I get are empty slots in the pin it.
Pinterest has been very glitchy today. Maybe try again later. It’s been pinned a bunch, so it should work. Thanks!
Hi, was wondering if these have a cinnamon scent that is noticeable?
They do when fresh baked, but it’s not a lasting scent. You might want to try modifying the recipe to add more cinnamon, to see if the scent will be more lasting. Let me know how they turn out!
I lov ethis.I think they look adorable.Thanks.
I have never made salt dough ornaments and this variation looks great. Perhaps I shall try it.
Hi, what a cool recipe! I also got the ziplist thing to go around and locate recipes and put them all in one place!! How cool is that! Thanks so much, found you on Pinterest!! Sandy

I made these and they turned out great. Made the house smell amazing! Going to give some as gifts for Valentine’s Day. Great craft idea and really easy!
Love this! my place smells fantastic while they’re in the oven. Definitely doing this with my students tomorrow – bitty footballs here we come!
How breakable are these? I always use polymer, and it stands up to lots of tests I’ve given it!
And, have you tried to extend the lasting time of the scent by adding more cinnamon?!!
Thanks for emailing me re these questin … kj
I’ve been very careful with mine and have had very little breakage. It’s hard to say exactly how long they will last. Yes, definitely add more cinnamon for more scent. I hope you enjoy yours!
