Coleslaw is one of those dishes that makes a lot for very little money. The dressing takes only a few minutes to make, and if you buy bags of shredded cabbage or broccoli slaw, you can have the entire dish ready in no time. With the hectic lives that most of us lead, quickly getting something on the table is always welcomed.

You’ll notice when looking at the ingredients that there are no celery seeds in this recipe for coleslaw dressing. That’s because I don’t care for celery seeds. I find them bitter, and it always seems one gets stuck in my teeth. When that happens, the bitter flavor ruins the meal for me. However, if you like celery seeds, you can add them (about ½ teaspoon should do). You can also add a sprinkling of celery salt to get some celery flavor without worrying about unwanted seeds in your teeth.

Homemade Coleslaw Dressing Lets You Adjust the Sweetness Level

Have you ever noticed how many different types of coleslaw there are at the grocery store? Some are vinegary (without mayo), others are sweet, and some have celery seeds. You can find coleslaw that uses shredded cabbage and others where the cabbage is chopped into little pieces. The beauty of this recipe is that you can use it as a base to create a dish that suits your tastes.

I’ve always been partial to the one from a famous chicken fast-food restaurant – you know, the one where you can buy a “bucket” featuring those special herbs and spices. Their coleslaw is chopped and sweet – my favorite type. So, I taste my dressing to determine if I need more sweetener, and you can do the same.

Next, pour it over a bag of broccoli slaw or shredded Brussels sprouts and mix. Enhance your coleslaw by adding some dried fruit, seeds, or nuts. I like raisins, cranberries, sunflower seeds, slivered almonds, and pumpkin seeds.

What to Do With Coleslaw Dressing – Besides Making Coleslaw

It may be called coleslaw dressing, but that doesn’t mean you have to use it like that. The dressing works well for any salad, not just slaw. It can be used in place of Caesar dressing in a Caesar salad or spread on sandwiches in place of mayonnaise. This dressing makes a delicious dip for crunchy veggies, chicken tenders, zucchini, sweet potato, or French fries.

How to Make Ahead and Store

Coleslaw dressing is easy to make ahead of time and keeps well in an airtight container for up to 1 week. You can use the entire batch with about 8 cups of shredded cabbage and carrots or make smaller amounts throughout the week.

Serving Suggestions

Once you prepare your coleslaw using this dressing, you’ll have a tasty side dish to go with meat, poultry, sandwiches, fish, and burgers. It is perfect for BBQs and picnics. If you plan an outdoor meal, and the weather turns rainy, serve your coleslaw with Oven Baked BBQ Chicken. You won’t even miss the grill. Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sugar, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until smooth and well combined.

  • Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. For a thinner consistency, add a little water or more vinegar.
