How to Make a Sock Snowman - About A Mom

If you’re regular reader of this blog, you know that we are always trying to come up with holiday craft projects using things that can easily be found around the house. Living so far from any craft stores has forced my daughter and I to become more resourceful. Last week I used a men’s tube sock to create a cute snowman candy dish, so here I was left with an unmatched tube sock… what is a crafty person to do with that? After doing a little browsing on the internet, I decided to make a sock snowman. I am now wishing I had taken more pics to show a step-by-step tutorial, but anyway here you have it… How to Make a Sock Snowman.

Here’s What You’ll Need
men’s tube sock (size large)
rice (2 lb bag)
scrap fabric
pom poms
felt scraps
glue gun
2 large rubber bands

How to Make a Sock Snowman - About A Mom

1. To form the body, fill sock with rice (to desired size) and secure tightly with a rubber band.

2. Add more rice to the sock to form the head, and secure tightly with a rubber band.

3. Cut off excess sock from top.

4. Using your hands, scrunch and mold with your hands to create shape that you want.

5. Use glue gun, to further secure the head to the body.

6. To create hat, measure the diameter of the head where you want the hat to set. Cut a rectangular piece of fabric the width that you measured. Flannel worked nicely for this. Hand sew the seam to form a tube. Turn inside out and using a needle and thread, gather one end tightly to form the top of the hat. Turn hat right side out, fold the bottom of the fabric to form a rim. Attach the hat to the snowman’s head using glue gun. Glue pom pom to top of hat.

7. To create the face use pom poms and felt for the eyes, nose, and mouth. I added a dab of blush to the cheeks, and glued on miniature snow flakes (optional).

8. To create the scarf, cut a long rectangular piece of fabric that and tie it around the snowman’s neck.

You can use whatever you have on hand to create the face, hat and scarf. If you don’t have any pom poms for the face, scraps of felt would work just fine.

What a neat idea, I love it. Pinned so I can come back and make this with my 5-year old.

I love the idea of the potpourri in the Santa! Is there a peppermint potpourri?

you could put a little essential oils in a sealed bag with the rice, shake, and let sit (overnight is good) then fill your snowman with your scented rice.

Easily 10-12 years ago, I bought a jar of “Herbal Therapy Sinus Help Inhalation Beads” fragranced with eucalyptus, peppermint and lemongrass. They still work today as well as when I bought them. These are the same poly-something beads I recently bought at JoAnn Fabrics for stuffing these same snowmen. When I had a small home business some years ago of making glycerine soaps, bath bombs, lotions, shower gel, etc., I read a recipe to put these beads in a jar, add your choice of fragrance and color and allow to steep for some time. That might be just what you’re looking for. I live in South Florida and want nothing to do with rice or pot pourri as both will eventually attract bugs.

Super cute! Love this idea. My sister made sock snowmen one year for Christmas when she was young and gave them to us all as gifts 🙂

Hi Jennifer . Do you mind if I ask about your last name. Unusual, my maiden name. My fathers family is from Pa. I live in Va. Where is your family from? Thanks, Cheryl

So cute! My son would love this. It is similar to a project one of my nephews did. He used beans and wrote on the socks with sharpies. These are cuter (don’t tell my nephew).

If you have any orange socks, a jack o lantern version would be adorable. A black sock could be a black cat. Think im going to be visiting the local thrift store sometime soon. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

I LOVE this idea!! I shared this idea so I can look closer at it later! I thought this would be a great activity to do with children….and even have them make their own Christmas presents for their teachers and friends (or whomever they want to make them for)! Thanks for sharing this idea! 🙂
