I’m so glad that it’s grilling season. Bringing people together by serving up my favorite bbq and hosting grilling parties is something that I truly enjoy. Last weekend my daughter and I turned a boring frank into a fabulous feast by throwing a hot dog bar party. It was a first for us and definitely will not be the last. Our friends and family truly enjoyed it. We managed to inexpensively put on a memorable party with just a few simple tricks.

It’s all about the toppings.

As you might expect, a hot dog bar needs a variety of toppings to be successful. Here’s a list of the toppings we served: guacamole, sliced jalapeno, diced tomato, diced onion, sweet relish, nacho cheese sauce, grated Cheddar cheese, chili, mango salsa, mustard and ketchup.

It’s all in the details.

We lined the table with a pretty red, white, and blue table cloth and went with that same color scheme for our serving containers and paper goods. We put the hot dog toppings into some very inexpensive red and blue plastic bowls from our local discount store. We also picked up some serving baskets with paper liners, like the ones you might see in your favorite sandwich shop.

In addition to the hot dogs, we served baked beans, chips, and macaroni salad. We spooned the macaroni salad into small singer serve plastic cups, so that everyone could just grab-and-go. It was a fun addition. We tried to do the same with the baked beans, but quickly learned that the hot beans would melt the cups. Live and learn.
