Don't have hot dog buns? No worries! Make hot dogs in a loaf pan using Bisquick baking mix.

Yesterday was National Hot Dog Day and we paid homage to the the all mighty hot dog by testing out a fabulous hot dogs in a loaf recipe. This kid approved recipe is super easy and a fun twist on the traditional hot dog with a bun. The recipe will sure come in handy the next time you have a package of hot dogs and no buns. This actually happens quite often in our house. I’m glad to report that this recipe is a keeper, so go on give it a try and let us know how you like it.

You might also want to check out this 4-Ingredient Chili Dog Casserole recipe! And, if that’s not hot dog inspiration for you take a look at these 4 Killer Hot Dog Recipes.

The recipe uses one of our favorite old standbys, Bisquick. Oh how I love the convenience of Bisquick baking mix!

Top this off with some homemade hot dog chili. YUM.

Do you have to use Bisquick baking mix?

No, you can use any brand of baking or biscuit mix. Similar to this Mini Corn Dog Muffins with Dill Relish recipe, using a cornbread mix would be delicious too.

Ingredients:

  • 6 hot dogs
  • 2 tablespoons sweet relish
  • 1 cup Bisquick baking mix
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon parsley flakes
  • 1 egg

Instructions:

Step 1: Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease loaf pan, 9x5x3 inches. Split hot dogs lengthwise, not cutting completely through. Fill each with about 1 teaspoon relish. Mix remaining ingredients with fork; beat vigorously 30 seconds. Spread in pan. Arrange hot dogs crosswise on dough in pan, curing slightly and pressing to fit pan. Press into dough slightly. Bake until bread is light brown, about 20 minutes.

Step 2: Note: The relish may be replaced with strips of cheese, ketchup or mustard.

Step 3: To serve, cut bread between hot dogs. Recipe yields 3 or 4 servings.

What a clever idea! I used to love hot dog “caddy” buns–they’re U-shaped so they don’t fall apart–but can’t find them anymore. This would be a terrific alternative; will give it a try this weekend. Thanks for posting it!

It’s probably the morning sickness, but these pictures are getting to me today! I’ll have to try back in a few months 🙂

No offense though–most food does this to me right now!
