How to Make a Rag Wreath for the Holidays

Making a rag wreath for the holidays couldn’t be any simpler. It’s actually so easy to make, that there isn’t much to say about it. This project is a great use for any scrap fabric you may have, or you can do like me and purchase some holiday fabric from your local fabric store.

I used a 12″ Wire Wreath Frame like this one on Amazon for $5.98, although you could find one at your local craft store. If you want to be very thrifty, I’ve also seen where people have used a wire coat hanger shaped into a circle. But I wanted mine to be more full, so I went with the wreath frame. To get it super full, I used 4 yards of fabric, 1 yard each of 4 coordinating holiday colors. However, you could easily get by using much less fabric. Now that it’s done, I’m thinking it would have been cute to add some ribbon to it… for next time.

How to Make a Rag Wreath for the Holidays

Begin by cutting or tearing your fabric into 12 inch by 1 inch pieces. They don’t have to be exact. Once you have your fabric strips ready, it’s time to start tying them onto the wreath frame. Simply tie each strip onto the frame, using a basic knot. Repeat this process until your wreath is complete and at your desired fullness. Easy peasy!

It doesn’t take long to make. I mad this wreath while watching NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles the other night. I love a project like this that doesn’t require much thought, and can be done while watching television.

What do you think? What holiday craft projects do you have planned?

I like this! Yours came out just gorgeous, it almost looks like an heirloom piece to me. I agree with you about the ribbon – I’m going to tie a ribbon bow that hangs down under it. You know the semi-sheer gold ribbon that has a little wire to it, so it holds it’s shape?? I’m going to use that. Thanks for a great idea, it’s SO pretty!

I love this so simple!!! Just a quick question did you tie these around the wreath frame or did you layer it as the frame is made?

I made an Easter wreath, using your instructions. My fabric was a combination of blues, greens, and yellow. I hot-glued a $1 plush Easter bunny from the dollar store on the top after I tied on all the fabric strips, then I glued plastic Easter eggs (also from the dollar store) in assorted colors around the wreath. So cute! Thanks for the instructions!
