With St Patrick’s Day just a month away on March 17th, we thought it would be fun to do a Leprechaun paper plate craft. This fun craft is a great way to teach kids about St Patrick’s Day.
Leprechaun Paper Plate Craft
Leprechaun Fun Facts
What is a Leprechaun? A leprechaun is an Irish fairy that looks like a little old man. He is about two feet tall and dresses like a shoemaker. Leprechauns are supposed to be unfriendly little men who lives alone in the forest, spending all of their time making shoes and guarding their treasures. If someone catches a leprechaun, he will be forced to tell where he hides all his pots of gold. However, the leprechaun must be watched at all times. If his captor looks away, the leprechaun will vanish along with his treasure.
Materials:
paper plate
green, black and yellow construction paper
2 googly eyes
red curling ribbon
black marker or crayon
scissors
craft glue
hole punch
Directions:
First make a hat with construction paper. On either side of a piece of green construction paper, cut a strip about 1 inch wide. Make sure not to cut all the way down, to allow for the brim of the hat. Cut a strip of black for the hat trim and a yellow square for the buckle. Fold the yellow square in half and cut an inner square to create a hollow rectangle. Attach the black trim and yellow buckle to the hat with glue. We also embellished the hat with some shamrocks we traced from a cookie cutter.
Glue the hat to the top of the paper plate.
Draw on a mouth and eyes or glue on two large googly eyes.
Using your scissors, cut and curl 16 inch long pieces or red ribbon. The number of ribbon pieces you need will vary, depending on how many holes you punch (next step).
Around the bottom of the paper plate punch holes to attach the curled ribbon for a beard. Slip a piece of curled ribbon through each hole and secure with a knot.
