Pies aren’t just for dessert. They are perfect for any occasion. Serving quiche for breakfast is a great example of how pies can be eaten and enjoyed at any time of the day. Savory pies are the perfect one dish meal for lunch or dinner. Hand pies, like the Coal Fired Port Hand Pies and Mini Savory Chicken Hand Pies in my Foodie collection, are wonderful for picnics and meals on-the-go. Savory Pies are the perfect make ahead dish for parties. The Spanakopita that I make, a Greek spinach pie, is a favorite when I host a get together.

Let’s talk about pies for a minute…
Are all pies round and what makes a pie a pie? According to Wikepedia A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough casing that covers or completely contains a filling of various sweet or savory ingredients. So, it seems it’s all in the crust.
Here’s a tasty tidbit for you – historians have recorded that the roots of pie can loosely be traced back to the ancient Egyptians during the Neolithic Period or New Stone Age beginning around 9500 BC. Some of the earliest pies to be found in cookbooks were British Meat Pies, and I couldn’t resist adding a traditional meat pie to this collection. There’s something very comforting about a meat pie on a cool winter night. Savory browned meat, studded with veggies inside a flaky crust. Although, Meat Pie doesn’t appear to be a very popular dish in the U.S. which is a shame because it’s so delicious!
