Crispy grilled chicken wings with just the right amount of sweetness and a kick! This sweet and spicy grilled wings recipe is perfect for game day or anytime you want something spicy. Boiling the wings before grilling ensures they are cooked through, without getting too charred and crispy on the grill.
I have a confession to make.
I’m a New York fan. Yup. This Florida girl is rooting for NY football team these days. To be honest, I never really cared a whole lot about football until I started dating Andy. Early in our relationship we drove to Jacksonville to watch his favorite New York professional football team play in Florida, and I was hooked – on both the team and the guy. The rest is history and today I’m sharing one of our favorite game time snacks with you. I think you’re going to love this sweet and spicy grilled wings recipe!
During the first year of our relationship, we both gained what we like to call “happy pounds” and I still struggle with the few extra pounds. I love to cook for this man… and I love to eat what I cook. We both enjoy foods with a little kick like these sweet and spicy grilled wings. I can’t say that my poor stomach enjoys it quite so much. Spicy foods have a tendency to give me heartburn. Luckily, now after taking Nexium® 24HR Capsules for 14 days, I’ve got all-day, all-night protection from frequent heartburn.
Plus, I might occasionally experience heartburn while watching the Jets play. I do have a tendency to root for the underdog, but COME ON guys. It’s time for a winning season! You’re killing me here. At least I’ll be winning on game day with my spicy grilled wings! Whether I’m prepping food for a tailgate party or getting some stadium food at the game, I have a passion for food and it’s a major part of my life. But I’m often not able to enjoy the spicy foods I love because of my frequent heartburn. That’s why I’m excited to partner with Nexium® 24HR Capsules to encourage people to fight frequent heartburn and join in all of life’s moments- no matter what’s on the menu.
Nexium® 24HR is the perfect sponsor for this sweet and spicy wings recipe. Nexium® 24HR is intended to treat frequent heartburn. If you have frequent heartburn AND like your wings hot you can still enjoy these finger-licking-good spicy grilled wings with a little help from Nexium® 24HR Capsules.
Why Grilled Chicken Wings?
Grilling is my preferred method of cooking for most meats, including wings. It’s grilling season year round in Florida, and the mess is easier to clean up when you grill outdoors. Cleaning up grease splatter or scrubbing a broiling pan isn’t exactly how I want to spend my time before or after a game. Plus, Andy usually does the grilling now so that’s less work for me! In fact, this method of boiling the wings before putting them on the grill is all his idea. He does this with ribs too and says it’s an Irish thing. It seemed really strange to me at first, but after tasting the end result I’m a huge fan. Boiling the meat first ensures that it cooks through, and you don’t have to worry about it getting overly crispy on the grill. With this method you’ll get wings that are perfectly crunchy and juicy every time.
Sweet and Spicy Grilled Wings
This wings marinade recipe is enough for 2 dozen wings, but you can easily double or triple the recipe. I usually purchase fresh wings from my grocer which come in 2 dozen packages, but for larger crowds I buy frozen packages of 4 dozen wings and thaw before cooking. This recipe is moderately hot. If you prefer your wings more mild or hot, you can adjust the amount of red pepper or hot sauce to your liking.
1/2 cup hot chili pepper sauce (or your favorite hot sauce)
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
juice from 1/2 a lime
2 dozen bone-in chicken wings, thawed
Whisk together the first seven ingredients. Set aside.
Boil wings at a low simmer for 5 to 8 minutes. Drain and gently pat wings to dry. Place wings in bowl with the marinade and toss to coat well, cover with plastic wrap. Marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes to one hour or up to 24 hours in the refrigerator.
Place wings on grill over low, direct heat. Grill 4 to 5 minutes per side, or to desired crispness and char. During the first few minutes of grilling baste with leftover marinade, if desired. If you like this recipe, please PIN IT and share it with friends.
