Yogurt Smoothie Recipe

Like many people, I love a good smoothie. I’ve spent years making them for my kids and myself. These days, with just me at home, smoothies often substitute for meals when I don’t feel like cooking. Since I ALWAYS have a container of plain Greek yogurt on hand, this yogurt smoothie recipe is a regular in my house.

The best part about making smoothies is their versatility, which means you can alter the ingredients to what you have in the house. And, with the availability of frozen fruit at the grocery store, you never have to worry about what’s in season.

I think I recently learned that the hard way. I visit an organic blueberry farm in my Florida city each week from mid-March through May. I pick an average of 5 pounds of blueberries each week, rinsing, drying, and freezing most of them in zipper bags. This year, I got smart. I tied two buckets around my waist. One is for smaller baking berries, and the other is for larger eating and smoothie berries. I like the big ones for smoothies because they are often sweeter.

Of course, at around $7 per pound, you can imagine how much money I spent and how much room they take up in the freezer. I’ve since noticed that my local grocer sells organic frozen berries for less, especially on sale. I think I’ll limit myself to picking only what I want to eat each week next year and forgoing the freezing process.

Why Yogurt Is Ideal For Smoothies

Greek yogurt provides a protein boost and creamy texture to your smoothie. Instead of eating a bowl of yogurt with some fruit in the morning, making a breakfast smoothie is more fun. You get plenty of calcium for strong bones, and since plain Greek yogurt has beneficial probiotics without added sugar, it is a healthy way to start the day.

You never have to limit yourself to having smoothies at a set time of day. While they make a great breakfast, they can also be used as a lunch, snack, or dinner option. There aren’t many meals that can come together as quickly and easily as a smoothie. Besides, if you want to increase the nutritional value, add a handful of spinach, kale, protein powder, chia seeds, flaxseeds, oats, or nut butter.

FAQs & Tips

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Yogurt smoothies are best enjoyed straight away but can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The ingredients may separate a little, so shake well before serving. You can also blend them with ice cubes to thicken them before drinking.

Does The Fruit Need To Be Frozen?

Using frozen fruit helps to make the smoothie thicker. If your fruit is not frozen, you may want to eliminate the milk when blending and only add it if you wish to adjust the texture. You can also use a few ice cubes to give your smoothie a more frozen texture if you do not use frozen fruit. Some people like their smoothies on the thinner side, like the ones you get in small containers at the grocery store. Use fresh rather than frozen fruit if that is the texture you like.

Is A Sweetener Necessary In Smoothies?

I don’t like overly sweet smoothies, so I rarely add any sweetener to the blender until after I blend and taste my beverage. The sweetness of the drink will depend on the sweetness of the fruit. Taste the mixture, and then decide if you want to make it sweeter. You can use honey as shown in the recipe or substitute maple, date, agave syrup, or any other sweetener you like.

Serving Suggestions

As much as I enjoy a good yogurt smoothie for breakfast, sometimes I want something to chew with it. Scones are the perfect option, as they can be savory or sweet. Some of my favorites include Gluten-Free Scones, Cheese Scones, and Cranberry-Orange Scones.

During the fall holidays, a slice of Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bread along with your smoothie is a wonderful way to start (or end) the day. Enjoy!
