Not just for bagels, Everything Bagel Seasoning is a blend you’ll find many uses for—it’s great on popcorn!

Have you ever taken a good look at your spice rack? How many different bottled spice and seasoning blends have you bought? I had an entire shelf devoted to them a few months ago, only to discover that many had expired years earlier. That’s because we often need a particular blend for one recipe, so we go out and buy it. Then, after using it, it gets relegated to the back of our shelf and forgotten. My new trick is to make them myself with individual spices and herbs I already have, such as for everything bagel seasoning.

I keep both granulated and minced onion and garlic on hand, so they are always ready for use. Since I like to use sesame seeds to coat seared tuna, which I make at least once a month, I keep a bottle of mixed white and black seeds in my pantry. I use poppy seeds when I make hamantaschen or other Danish treats, so they were ready to go for this recipe. And, since I’m a lover of flaky sea salt, especially for topping butter, that was also quickly at hand. Why go out and buy another bottle when I have all the makings for this seasoning blend at my disposal?

If you’ve never used everything seasoning before, you are in for a treat. It goes far beyond the crusty, chewy bagel. Let’s think outside the box a bit, such as sprinkling it on popcorn. How about adding it to pizza or focaccia dough or sprinkling it on top before adding other toppings? Any breads or rolls you make can also benefit from this seasoning. Now, let’s go even further and sprinkle it on potato skins, baked potatoes, fish, chicken, steak, and pork. See what I mean? The uses are limitless, so go ahead and surprise your family with meals that look as good as they taste.

Frequently asked questions about making everything bagel seasoning

You probably have some questions about making everything bagel seasoning, so I figure now’s a great time to answer them.

What Substitutes Can I Use For Onion Flakes And Garlic Granules?

You can use dried minced garlic and minced onion if you can’t find onion flakes and garlic granules. Garlic powder is not the same as garlic granules, as the granules are coarser, which you want for this recipe. Garlic powder dissolves more quickly, so it won’t work as well in a seasoning mix applied to the exterior of items like bagels and rolls.

Do I Have To Toast The Sesame Seeds?

No, you can make everything bagel seasoning without toasting the sesame seeds. I like to toast them because it brings out more flavor. Just make sure you don’t burn them, or the seasoning will be ruined.

Can I Leave Out An Ingredient?

Yes, you can customize this recipe as you like. Some people omit the poppy seeds. I often cut back on garlic because not everyone can handle a lot of it.

Can I Make It Spicy?

Absolutely! You can add some crushed red pepper flakes to bring a bit of heat.

Which Herbs Pair Well With This Seasoning Blend?

Dried chives, thyme, basil, oregano, and rosemary can add more flavor to your everything seasoning. You can add them to your overall mix or add some when using it for a particular recipe. For example, I don’t know if I would want to add basil, oregano, thyme, or rosemary when making this Bagel Recipe, but they would be great if I’m making garlic rolls for an Italian meal.

How do I store leftovers?

Once combined, store everything bagel seasoning in a glass spice bottle or other jar. It’s best to avoid using plastic, as the odors from garlic and onions will permeate it. I keep empty glass spice bottles (washed and dried) on hand for when I make my own blends. Mason jars also work. Remember to store all spices and seasonings away from light and heat, as exposure to them can cause them to spoil faster. This seasoning mix will last up to 6 months when stored properly.

Serving suggestions

Aside from using everything bagel seasoning on bagels, you can also use it to make the most delicious Gluten-Free Buns and Hamburger Buns for your sandwiches. Add more flavor to this Olive Bread Recipe or sprinkle it on the crust of this Buffalo Chicken Pizza before adding all the toppings. Top Baked Potato Slices, or use this Easy Twice-Baked Potato Recipe with the seasoning for additional crunch and flavor.
