Learning How To Make A Milkshake is so simple that you’ll always want to keep ice cream on hand for a frosty treat!

How to Make a Milkshake

Have you ever visited an ice cream parlor and wondered why milkshakes were so expensive? The simple truth is you are paying for their employees, rent, and other overhead expenses. A few scoops of ice cream and a little milk are all you need when learning how to make a milkshake, and you can do it at home for far less money.

The trick is knowing the correct ice cream-to-milk ratio to make your shake drinkable. If you get it wrong, you’ll either need a spoon if it’s too thick or have flavored milk if it’s too runny.

Have no fear; I’m about to help you make some delicious milkshakes at home that will please the biggest shake lovers out there. Let’s start with the proper ratio. You want to use 3 scoops of ice cream to 1/3 cup of milk. You can use any flavor of ice cream and any milk. So, if you’re dairy-free or vegan, you can use the plant-based ice cream and milk you like.

The only tool you’ll need is a blender (a food processor or stand mixer will work in a pinch). Even if you don’t have an ice cream scoop, you can use a large spoon to judge how much ice cream would be in a scoop. Now, one slight issue is that not all scoops are the same size. Yours might be larger or smaller than the one we used for this recipe. If your milkshake is too thick, add more milk for consistency. A more watery shake needs more ice cream to thicken it up.

The Big Three: Chocolate, Strawberry, And Vanilla Milkshakes

The most common milkshake flavors are chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. We’ll focus on those here, but I’ll give you some fun flavor combinations in the FAQs section below. The best shakes are made with the best quality products, so keep that in mind when choosing your ice cream brands. Here’s how to make these shakes, along with some suggestions for jazzing them up a bit:

  • Chocolate Milkshake: Use a high-quality chocolate ice cream without a lot of additives. You can enhance the chocolate flavor with a teaspoon of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup.
  • Strawberry Milkshake: Use ice cream that contains real strawberries, not artificial flavors. Add fresh strawberries or any other berries to enhance the taste of the milkshake.
  • Vanilla Milkshake: When possible, use high-quality vanilla ice cream containing vanilla bean specks. Avoid artificial flavors. Add ¼ teaspoon of real (not artificial) vanilla extract for more vanilla flavor.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Milkshakes are best consumed immediately, as they become watery the longer they sit. You can cover them and put them in the refrigerator for up to 10-15 minutes if necessary. If you cover and freeze your shake, you will need to let it sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes after removing it from the freezer. Stir before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Milkshakes are a decadent treat that can go with anything, but I often recommend serving them with healthier meals for nutritional balance. Some of my favorite kid-friendly suggestions include Healthy Mac and Cheese, Pesto Salmon, Healthy Chicken Enchiladas, and Tuna Patties.
