Sometimes even the best of plans fall through. What’s important is that you don’t give up. Instead, you make even better plans. This was the case with our spring break travel plans. Having been to NYC on numerous occasions by myself, I really wanted to bring my two nieces along for their first visit to the Big Apple over spring break. Needless to say, our plans fell through. I didn’t let that ruin our spring break fun though. In fact, it motivated me to plan some really fun family time.

Earlier this year, I partnered with Alamo to make a family travel resolution. This girl never backs down from a challenge, so I decided to make a travel resolution to unplug for 24 hours during our spring break travels. That means no texting, gaming or watching television. Pretty much no technology for 24 hours. Sounds hard to do, right? It really wasn’t!
So our big travel plans fell through, but I still wanted us to spend some family time unplugged during spring break. I did resolve to do so, after all. To make sure we didn’t waver from this resolution, I planned some fun things for us to do.
We went geocaching. I spent an entire afternoon geocaching with my son and his friends. Technically, you might consider our GPS device as against the being unplugged rules. I let it slide though, because we had so much fun outdoors searching for hidden treasures.
This activity is fun for big kids and little kids. We had a blast!
Check out this awesome treasure we found…

We also visited the zoo, and got up close and personal with some interesting characters.
We spent some time in downtown Charleston. To help make up for our our failed NYC trip, I took my nieces on a short trip into downtown Charleston. We went on a neat Charleston walking tour.
We ate a delicious lunch at Poogin’s Porch. They say it’s haunted.
Doing something crafty was an absolute must for spring break, so we made some travel journals using photos from past adventures. I love how these turned out.
Next summer we are spending 2 weeks in Europe for Becca’s senior trip. We decided that between now and then we would get more familiar with some of the countries we are visiting – Switzerland, Italy, and France.
I have been hunting for some authentic recipes for us to try. During spring break, we made an authentic dish that is popular in Rome called Spaghetti Aglio E Olio. I have noticed that our Americanized Italian dishes are quite different from the more simplified ways of eating pasta in Italy. They don’t slather on quite as much red sauce and cheese as we do.
This was also a great opportunity for Maddie to get some cooking tips from Grandma Laura.
Buon Appetito!
I’d say we did a pretty good job of making the most of spring break… even when things didn’t go as planned. Unplugging for 24 hours wasn’t so hard. In fact, we spent a lot more than 24 hours unplugged during spring break. Easy peasy!

We had a wonderful spring break but it went by entirely too fast. I’m now looking forward to spending summer vacation with my boys.
Spring break is always fun! I am so happy you all had such a good time; the pasta dish in the last picture looks so yummy!
Hi Angela, Loved Grandma Laurie and Maddie’s picture of time together with the spaghetti and your Spring Break ideas an entire afternoon geocaching and more – plus your planned trip for next year – Wow! I am wanting to be a part of it all!
Geocaching sound like a lot of fun! I would love to try it someday myself! I am just not quite ready yet, but I will be soon!
It looks like you had a great time. I love your family picture: so nice
My Son was just talking about geocaching. It sounds like a fun way to spend the day.
I would love to go to New York, but I think my next destination is Miami this weekend. I’m excited to go.
If you can’t get to New York, Miami isn’t a bad second choice! Lots of fun to be had there too!
I think it is a great idea to unplug during a vacation. It would be nice to connect with each other.
It also looks like you had a tonne of fun! I want that past right now. It really looks great and light for the spring too.
It sounds like you guys had a great time! My kids pretty much vegged out for the entire spring break, but I was okay with that. =D
