There’s a wonderful new middle grade book from Disney-Hyperion out that encourages kids in STEM. Click’d by New York Times best-selling author, Tamara Ireland Stone, combines friendship, coding, and lots of popcorn in a fun and empowering book for kids ages 9 to 12. Let Click’d inspire your middle-grader to learn to code!

I get so excited over children’s programs and books that promote science, technology, engineering and math. A visit to the Museum of Science and Industry and Planetarium a while back, got T very excited about space. So much that she now wants to be a space scientist when she grows up. At age 9, she is sure to change her mind about a lot of things, but her love for science is something I hope sticks with her and I am doing what I can to encourage it. I got her a telescope and some space books for her birthday last month, along with a globe and World Atlas to encourage her wanderlust. I’m also planning on taking her to the Kennedy Space Center soon. I want her to know that she can do anything she sets her mind to. I love how the character, Allie, in Click’d is breaking stereotypes with her interest in coding.
Click’d by Tamara Ireland Stone
Allie Navarro can’t wait to show her best friends the app she built at CodeGirls summer camp. Click’d pairs users based on common interests and sends them on a fun (and occasionally rule-breaking) scavenger hunt to find each other. And it’s a hit. By the second day of school, everyone is talking about Click’d.
Watching her app go viral is amazing. Leaderboards are filling up! Everyone’s making new friends. And with all the data Allie is collecting, she has an even better shot at beating her archenemy, Nathan, at the upcoming youth coding competition. But when Allie discovers a glitch that threatens to expose everyone’s secrets, she has to figure out how to make things right, even if that means sharing the computer lab with Nathan. Can Allie fix her app, stop it from doing any more damage, and win back the friends it hurt—all before she steps on stage to present Click’d to the judges?
