If you like chocolate, you’re going to love these old fashioned baked chocolate doughnuts with chocolate glaze and sprinkles. They couldn’t be any simpler to make.

Old Fashioned Chocolate Doughnuts with Chocolate Glaze

Baked doughnuts are the best. Think of cupcakes. I don’t fry much of anything. In fact, I can’t think of a single food that I deep fry. It’s just not my thing. A couple years ago, I picked up some doughnut pans and my opinion on making doughnuts at home was magically transformed. My Baked Pumpkin Doughnuts with a Maple Glaze have been a big hit, so I think it’s time to share another doughnut recipe with you.

This latest batch of doughnuts was inspired by a recent trip. Last week I told you about my amazing weekend in Washington DC with American Heritage Chocolate, and I am excited to partner with them once again to share this recipe with you. After returning home, I was eager to bake up some treats using my American Heritage Chocolate products.

AMERICAN HERITAGE CHOCOLATE

American Heritage Chocolate is an authentic historic line of products—developed from chocolate recipes from the 1750’s—that celebrates chocolate’s important role in the lives of Americans during the 18th century and is reminiscent of what Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Ben Franklin would have enjoyed, combining all natural ingredients and exotic spices.

Made with all-natural ingredients and no preservatives, American Heritage Chocolate is an artisanal dark chocolate containing 63% cacao.

Mildly spicy, and slightly sweet, American Heritage Chocolate is flavored with a blend of spices and ingredients available during colonial times, including cinnamon, nutmeg, chili pepper, orange, anise and vanilla.

American Heritage Chocolate is Kosher-certified, made without dairy, wheat, peanuts, or tree nuts, and is made in a facility that does not contain peanuts and tree nuts.

Chocolate Doughnuts with Chocolate Glaze

Ingredients:

Makes 8 doughnuts

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup grated American Heritage Chocolate Block
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 6 tablespoons sour cream
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ tsp. vanilla
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

Chocolate glaze:

  • 1 cup American Heritage Chocolate Drink
  • chocolate sprinkles (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Step 2: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, grated chocolate, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3: In a small bowl, beat together the vanilla, egg, sour cream, milk, and oil.

Step 4: Stir the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined.

Step 5: Spoon in a greased doughnut pan.

Step in 6: Bake for 8 minutes or until the tops spring back when you touch them.

Step 7: Let the donuts cool completely in the pan before glazing.

You’ll notice that these doughnuts aren’t dark in color. Don’t let that fool you. These doughnuts are packed with chocolate flavor. The American Heritage Chocolate Block doesn’t lend a deep chocolate color, but it has a wonderful dark chocolate flavor. This stuff is so good!

Baked Doughnuts

For glazing, place the American Heritage Chocolate Drink Mix in a microwave safe bowl. Do not add any liquid. You’ll have to trust me on this. This drink mix melts like magic. Melt the chocolate until smooth, in 20 second intervals, stirring between each interval. Dip the doughnuts into the melted drink mix, then dip into chocolate sprinkles.
