Start your day with this Chocolate Protein Shake and enjoy a healthy, nutritional boost.

Chocolate Protein Shake

Breakfast is an important meal, starting your day with crucial energy and protein for concentration. However, not everyone likes to eat in the morning, and some follow intermittent fasting guidelines until hours later. Perhaps you need to grab something for the on-the-go or as a pre- or post-workout boost. This chocolate protein shake fits all those needs and is a healthy, anytime snack or sugar-craving buster.

What I like best about making protein shakes is that they satisfy my desire for something sweet while also being healthy. I get a hefty boost of protein, collagen, vitamins, and minerals. The fruit also increases the fiber content, which improves digestion and regularity. Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do as you get older.

What Else Can I Add To This Shake?

Shakes and smoothies can be customized with any tasty ingredients you have on hand. I like to add berries, peaches, mangoes, cherries, and papaya to mine and try to keep some frozen and ready to go. When fruit is in season, buy extra to freeze. I go organic blueberry picking each spring and currently have about 30 pounds of frozen blueberries in my freezer. There were a lot more, but I have been using them in smoothies.

You can add flax seeds, dates, spinach, pineapple, cinnamon, and chia seeds to your chocolate protein powder shake. Healthy sweeteners include honey, maple syrup, agave, and date syrup. You probably won’t need a sweetener if your fruit is ripe.

Why Do You Put Ice In A Protein Shake?

Since we’re not using ice cream like traditional milkshakes, we use ice to replicate that thick consistency. The blending process breaks down the ice to create a smooth, consistent texture. You can start by using half the ice listed and see how you like the consistency before adding the rest.

Using ice cubes helps keep your protein shake icy cold so it doesn’t melt so fast. For the best results, I recommend putting the ingredients in the blender in the order listed. Sometimes, the protein powder or nut butter sticks to the sides of the blender. If this happens, you may need to scrape down the sides with a spatula halfway through.

How to Make Ahead and Store

You can make a chocolate protein shake up to 24 hours before you plan to drink it. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and shake it well before drinking it. For the best results, make sure to freeze any fruit you want to use the day before. If you want to store the shake longer, place it in the freezer in single-size portions and thaw slightly before pulsing it a few times in the blender to restore it to a drinkable consistency.

Serving Suggestions

Since I often have my protein shakes at breakfast, I like to serve them with some scones. I recommend trying Vanilla Bean Scones, Lemon Blueberry Scones, and for a savory treat, Cheese Scones.

Some other fun shakes to try are this Oreo Milkshake recipe and this one for a Pumpkin Pie Milkshake. It will get you in the season for the changing of the leaves.
