Creamy, nutty, and utterly delicious—this Original Grape Salad Recipe is a classic party staple for a reason.

One of the first dishes that I vividly remember enjoying as a kid was grape salad. It was served at nearly every potluck, picnic, and barbecue that I attended, no matter what time of year it was. I particularly loved eating it in the summertime after running around outside for hours. Nothing was better than feeling the cold burst of juice wash over my teeth as I bit into the firm, creamy grapes.

While the fresh pop of grapes certainly is refreshing, this dish is also sweet and dessert-like, too. The grapes are dressed with a mix of cream cheese, sour cream, and sugar, with a hint of vanilla extract for extra flavor. The topping features a mixture of crushed walnuts and brown sugar, which adds another layer of sweetness as well as a delightful caramelized crunch to each bite.

Since it’s fruit-based, I find this dish to be super versatile. I can just as easily enjoy a scoop of it for breakfast as I can for lunch or dinner, and it also happens to make a tasty snack or dessert. I also love that it’s easy to make and easy to transport. Not to mention, there’s no actual cooking involved to make it—everything just gets mixed together and served!

Grape Salad Recipe ingredients

What else can I add to grape salad?

This is definitely an easy recipe to experiment with and tweak to your liking. If you’d prefer a slightly tangier flavor, you can substitute the sour cream with Greek yogurt. Alternatively, you could use a vanilla-flavored yogurt to enhance the vanilla notes. Not a fan of walnuts? Use pecans, almonds, or pistachios instead. Consider toasting the nuts first to deepen the nutty flavor. In addition to grapes, you could also toss in other fruit for more color or flavor. Just be sure to pick ones that would hold up well in the dressing, such as strawberries, blueberries, orange slices, or pineapple chunks. You might even enjoy adding some crunchy elements like granola, desiccated coconut, or sunflower seeds.

How do I store leftovers?

You definitely want to make enough to have leftovers, as this salad tastes even better if it’s had a few hours (or even a night) in the fridge. Transfer any leftovers to an airtight container, and store them in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. If you haven’t already added the walnut-brown sugar topping to the salad, it’s best to store it separately to prevent it from getting soggy. Freezing is not recommended, as the grapes are likely to become mushy upon thawing, and the creamy dressing is likely to separate.

Serving suggestions

Since this dish is a classic side item at many casual gatherings like potlucks and barbecues, it pairs well with a variety of different party foods like Bacon Cheeseburgers, hot dogs, or Easy Slow-Cooker Pulled Pork Sliders. In addition, it’d go great with any number of sides, such as Smokey Baked Beans, Deviled Egg Potato Salad, and Garlic-Parmesan Grilled Corn. And what’s a party without a dreamy dessert, like this delicious Turtle Texas Sheet Cake?
