Deliciously minty, these fun, Shamrock Shakes will make you a hit with all your little leprechauns.

Shamrock Shake

Kids love colorful things. And Shamrock Shakes are a fun way to give them something to ooh, ah, and eek over, should they never have seen a green milkshake before. Shamrock Shakes aren’t just for Saint Patrick’s Day either—they’re for any day you want a cool, minty, yummy shake full of protein, calcium, and other wholesome nutrients. They’re fun for Halloween too, especially if you top them with glow-in-the-dark little cupcake toppers and decorations. They give the whole milkshake a deliciously eerie feeling.

Where Did Shamrock Shakes Come From?

Shamrock Shakes were originally invented by one McDonald’s franchise owner back in 1967 to celebrate March 17 (Saint Patrick’s Day), before spreading to other McDonald’s locations by 1970. They’re flavored mint, and topped with whipped cream and a cherry, which you are more than welcome to do with these homemade milkshakes, too.

If you want to try something a little different, top them with whipped cream dyed green for an extra green Saint Patrick’s Day theme. Watch their glee when they see that green whipped cream. If they’re too little to know the magic powers of food coloring, they’ll be like, “Mommy, where did you find green whipped cream?”

Seriously, these are great on hot days, delicious on cold days, and yummy all the days in between.

Lately, I’ve been trying to jog, well, jog walk, is more like it. And there is nothing more refreshing after getting off that treadmill than a cool, delicious Shamrock Shake, which is my way of saying, “You deserve it!” and “Way to Go!” all to myself.

How To Make Ahead And Store

Shamrock Shakes will keep 2 to 4 days in an airtight container or with plastic wrap draped and tied firmly around it, with a little touching the top to prevent a film from forming. Also, you can freeze these shakes up to 2 months and reblend them in a blender after thawing them in the refrigerator. You may need to add a little milk to get them back to that milkshake consistency you want.

Serving Suggestions

Throw a Shamrock Party this season and have your little leprechauns search for four-leaf clovers and play games like this Pot of Gold Slime Game. Or you can simply enjoy them with complementary dishes like these Viral Smash Burger Tacos, which everybody loves all the time, some Magically Delicious Lucky Charms Popcorn, these Green Velvet Cheesecake Bars and Leprechaun Gnome Treats for dessert.

This mint shamrock ice cream shake was so simple to make and it tastes so good! I had to test it out for quality control and I will definitely be making it again for my kiddos.
