Serve your family the colors of the rainbow when you make these refreshing Fruit Skewers. Snack time will never be the same.

Fruit Skewers

Let’s face it—children love to play with their food. I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen many adults do the same. After all, we’re all just a bunch of big kids anyway, right? Personally, I think Peter Pan had the right idea. Growing up is pretty hard at times. Any chance I get to feel like a kid, I take it. That’s why I love making Fruit Skewers.

How does making fruit skewers make me feel young? Well, let’s see. You get to play with your food by pushing wooden sticks through it. Need I say more? Okay, let’s digress for a minute and talk about what really matters: TASTE! Is there anything better than the taste of ripe, fresh fruit? Take a moment and think about the last succulent strawberry, juicy peach, and delicious grape you ate. See what I mean?

Making Fruit Skewers Is A Fun Activity That Kids Can Do

It’s always fun to include the little ones in kitchen activities, and making these tasty fruit kabobs is not only enjoyable but can also be highly educational. You can teach them about shapes, colors, sizes, letters, and numbers without them knowing they are learning. After all, blueberries are round, strawberries are often shaped like triangles, and you can cut your pineapple into squares or rectangles. Add some grapes, and you have ovals; orange segments are crescents, and kiwis are circles.

Tell them how many of each fruit to slide onto the skewer and count with them. You can also choose to go from big to small, dark to light colors, or alphabetize them. Then, if you are serving dips, they can help measure and mix them.

What Fruit Works Best for Skewers?

The possibilities are endless when making delightful sticks of fruit perfect for dipping, drizzling sauce, or enjoying as is. Some options include apples, apricots, bananas, blueberries, grapes, kiwis, mangoes, melons, nectarines, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapples, and strawberries.

How to Make Ahead and Store

You can make your fruit skewers in advance and refrigerate them in airtight containers or tightly covered with plastic wrap. Most fresh fruit will last up to 2 days.

Serving Suggestions

These tasty fruit skewers need nothing—they are cool, refreshing, and sweet enough on their own. However, if you want to take them to new heights and make a special snack or dessert time, provide some tasty dips on the side. You can serve it with pudding or flavored yogurt. Little dishes of Cream Cheese Frosting provide a sweet tang, while this delicious Pumpkin Dip will get everyone in the mood for autumn and the changing of the leaves. This recipe for Mermaid Party Dip has plenty of customizations listed, so you can change it up each time you make it. And, while you can put out melted chocolate fondue or bottles of chocolate and caramel sauce, you can also make this amazingly good Crock Pot Caramel Sauce that makes it fun to dip the fruit kabobs.
